FLAG DAY 2025

DR. STEPHEN PHINNEY: The roots of America are steeped in principles of justice and liberty, values that align with biblical teachings.
3

The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the principles of order, justice, and liberty, reflecting foundational truths that align with biblical wisdom. While it does not explicitly mention God, its framework embodies values deeply rooted in Scripture—such as the dignity of human life, the necessity of righteous governance, and the protection of individual freedoms.

Romans 13:1 declares, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." This verse underscores the divine sovereignty over nations and governments, reminding believers that earthly laws should reflect God's justice and righteousness.

The Constitution’s emphasis on freedom, responsibility, and moral accountability resonates with biblical teachings.

Galatians 5:13 reminds us, "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." True freedom is not lawlessness but the ability to live in righteousness under God’s authority.

Furthermore, the separation of powers and checks and balances within the Constitution reflect biblical wisdom found in Proverbs 11:14: "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." Wise governance requires accountability, ensuring that no single authority rules unchecked.

Ultimately, the Constitution provides a framework for justice and order, but it is only through Christ that true righteousness and lasting peace are established. As believers, we are called to uphold truth, seek justice, and pray for our nation’s leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2), recognizing that all authority is under God’s sovereign rule.

Defending the Roots of America

Flag Day in the United States is more than a celebration of a national symbol—it is a reminder of the values and principles that shaped the nation. For those who hold to biblical truths, this day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the passion to defend America’s foundational roots, which are deeply intertwined with faith, freedom, and moral responsibility. The Bible speaks often about the significance of remembrance, justice, and the defense of righteousness. As we honor the American flag, we are also called to protect the spiritual and moral integrity upon which the nation was established.

The Biblical Call to Remember and Honor:

Throughout Scripture, God commands His people to remember His deeds and honor the covenants He has made with them. In Joshua 4:6-7, after Israel crossed the Jordan River, stones were set as a memorial, so that future generations would ask, “What do these stones mean?” The answer would always point back to God’s faithfulness. Likewise, the American flag is a symbol—a visual reminder of the sacrifices made for liberty and the divine providence that has guided the nation’s course. Flag Day is an opportunity to remember how God’s hand has been upon the country, leading men and women to fight for freedom and truth.

Defending Righteousness:

The roots of America are steeped in principles of justice and liberty, values that align with biblical teachings. Proverbs 21:15 says, “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.” Defending the roots of America requires a commitment to upholding truth, justice, and righteousness, even in the face of opposition. Just as Nehemiah defended the walls of Jerusalem against those who sought to undermine God’s people (Nehemiah 4:14), so too must citizens stand firm in guarding the moral foundations upon which the United States was built.

Living as Ambassadors of Truth:

Indwelt Christians are called to be ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), representing His truth in all aspects of life, including civic duty. Flag Day is not merely about celebrating a piece of fabric—it is about renewing a commitment to faith-driven action. Just as Paul encouraged believers to “stand firm in the faith” and “be courageous” (1 Corinthians 16:13), so should Americans passionately defend the values of freedom, biblical morality, and godly leadership.

Never Forget

Flag Day is a powerful reminder of what America represents—faith, freedom, and the courage to uphold righteousness. As we reflect on the significance of the flag, let us also recommit ourselves to living out biblical principles, ensuring that America remains rooted in truth. The passion to defend the nation’s foundations is not only a patriotic duty but a biblical calling—to preserve justice, defend the faith, and honor the legacy of those who have sacrificed for freedom.

Take a moment and salute the flag today!
